Lake water temperature reference points
These reference points help place the feel and level of caution for the temperature shown. They remain indicative: wind, sun, immersion time and personal habit also matter.
-
Below 5 °C Icy water
The risk of cold shock (reflex hyperventilation) is highest. Dips last only a few minutes.
-
Between 5 °C and 10 °C Cold swimming zone
Prolonged exposure without a wetsuit is dangerous.
-
Between 10 °C and 15 °C Cold water
Immersion brings a sharp cold sensation, usually tolerated for short swims or with experience.
-
Between 15 °C and 20 °C Fresh water
Swimming is bracing but needs a short adaptation when entering.
-
Above 20 °C Pleasant water
Suitable for longer water activities.
These references are not medical advice and do not replace local safety guidance. Enter the water gradually, never swim alone in cold conditions, and watch for signs of hypothermia.
